Over the last 10+ years, I’ve transitioned my role from Product Designer to Service Designer and to Design management. As my role transitioned, my working environment changed along with it.

As an early User Experience designer in 2011, my focus was primarily on user experience. My job was to orchestrate the ecosystem of people at the backend to deliver a smooth user experience.

Good design coupled with future-proof strategy is almost enough. But execution is always the hardest part. In digital product design since 2017, I've learned that successful (innovative) product is only a mirror of a successful collaboration of innovative thinkers and doers.

Having been a design lead and senior advisor forces me to examine how a digital product team is rigged. And most often, the failure point is organisational culture: outdated skills & beliefs, organisation structure that creates bottlenecks, silos.

As a design leader, I recognise myself as part of the team that also does the work. I lead with openness to my weaknesses and strengths; recognising that my team members are often more skilled than I am. Therefore, I empower everyone to lead in their own way in their projects.
